Description
Virovir 250 (Strip of 6 Tablets)
Composition (per film-coated tablet):
- Famciclovir (250 mg):
- Famciclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by viruses, particularly those in the herpes virus family. It is a prodrug of penciclovir, which means that Famciclovir is converted into the active form (penciclovir) in the body after ingestion.
- Penciclovir works by inhibiting the DNA replication of viruses, which helps to reduce the severity and duration of the infection.
Mechanism of Action:
- Famciclovir (via its active form, penciclovir) inhibits the replication of viral DNA by blocking the DNA polymerase enzyme that the virus needs to replicate itself. By interfering with viral DNA synthesis, Famciclovir helps reduce viral load and speeds up the recovery process.
Indications:
Famciclovir is typically used to treat:
- Herpes Zoster (Shingles): Famciclovir helps reduce the severity and duration of shingles (caused by the varicella-zoster virus), which is characterized by a painful rash.
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Infections:
- Genital Herpes: Famciclovir is used to treat outbreaks of genital herpes caused by HSV-2 and can also help in reducing the frequency of recurrent episodes.
- Cold Sores: Famciclovir can help treat oral herpes (cold sores) caused by HSV-1.
- Prevention of Herpes Zoster Recurrence: In immunocompromised individuals or those at high risk for recurrence, Famciclovir can be used as a preventive treatment for shingles.
Dosage:
- Herpes Zoster (Shingles): The typical dosage is 250 mg of Famciclovir, taken three times daily for 7 days.
- Genital Herpes: The recommended dosage for first-time episodes is 250 mg, taken three times daily for 7 to 10 days. For recurrent episodes, 250 mg is typically taken twice daily for 5 days.
- Prevention of Herpes Zoster: The dosage may be adjusted based on the patient’s condition and risk of recurrence.
The exact dosage and duration of treatment will be determined by the healthcare provider based on the condition being treated, the severity of the infection, and the patient’s medical history.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Famciclovir may include:
- Headache.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Diarrhea.
- Fatigue.
- Dizziness.
Serious side effects, though rare, may include:
- Severe allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
- Kidney problems, particularly in individuals with pre-existing kidney disease.
- Confusion or hallucinations in elderly patients or those with kidney impairment.
- Low blood cell counts (rare).
Precautions:
- Renal Impairment: Famciclovir is primarily eliminated by the kidneys. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dose adjustments to avoid toxicity.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Famciclovir should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is excreted in breast milk, so caution is needed if it is used during breastfeeding.
- Allergic Reactions: If any signs of an allergic reaction occur (e.g., rash, itching, swelling), the medication should be discontinued and medical help sought.
- Hydration: It is important for patients to stay well-hydrated while taking Famciclovir, particularly those with kidney concerns, to help prevent kidney complications.
Storage:
- Store Virovir 250 tablets in a cool, dry place, away from direct light.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
