Pulmocef CV 250 is a combination antibiotic formulation used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It contains two active ingredients: Cefuroxime Axetil 250 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg, making the total strength 350 mg. Cefuroxime belongs to the second-generation cephalosporin class of antibiotics, while clavulanic acid is a β-lactamase inhibitor that enhances the effectiveness of cefuroxime against resistant bacteria.

Cefuroxime Axetil is a prodrug that gets converted into the active form, cefuroxime, in the body. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis. Once inside the body, it binds to essential penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located within bacterial cell walls. This prevents the proper formation of the peptidoglycan layer, which provides mechanical strength to the cell wall. Disruption of this process weakens the wall, leading to bacterial lysis and eventual death. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.

Clavulanic Acid is included to overcome resistance mechanisms in bacteria that produce β-lactamase enzymes. These enzymes typically break down β-lactam antibiotics like cefuroxime, rendering them ineffective. Clavulanic acid binds irreversibly to these enzymes, neutralizing their ability to degrade the antibiotic. This restores and enhances the antibacterial spectrum of cefuroxime, especially against β-lactamase–producing strains.

Indications for Pulmocef CV 350 generally include infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and bronchitis. It is also used for ear infections like otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain urinary tract infections. The combination is chosen particularly when mixed infections or resistance due to β-lactamase production are suspected.

Pharmacokinetics show that cefuroxime axetil is well absorbed when taken orally, especially with food. After absorption, it undergoes hydrolysis to form cefuroxime. Peak plasma levels are usually achieved within two to three hours. Cefuroxime is primarily excreted unchanged through the kidneys. Clavulanic acid is also well absorbed and is eliminated through both renal and non-renal pathways.

Side effects associated with Pulmocef CV 350 may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, or vomiting. Some individuals may experience headache, dizziness, or mild skin reactions. As with other β-lactam antibiotics, allergic responses can occur in sensitive individuals.

Storage generally requires keeping the tablets in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. The packaging is usually in strip form to maintain stability.
