SALT COMPOSITION Cetirizine (5mg/5ml)

Alerid Syrup contains Cetirizine (5 mg/5 ml), which is an antihistamine used to treat various allergic conditions, similar to the Alerid Tablet.

Salt Composition:

  • Cetirizine (5 mg/5 ml): Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine, which works by blocking the action of histamine in the body. Histamine is responsible for causing allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, and inflammation.

Uses:

Alerid Syrup is commonly used to treat:

  • Allergic rhinitis: Symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes caused by pollen, dust, pet dander, etc.
  • Urticaria (hives): Red, itchy welts on the skin due to an allergic reaction.
  • Hay fever: Seasonal allergies causing sneezing and nasal congestion.
  • Conjunctivitis: Allergic inflammation of the eyes.

It is also useful for treating allergic reactions to environmental allergens like dust and pollen.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Cetirizine works by blocking histamine receptors (H1 receptors), preventing the common allergic symptoms like itching, swelling, and redness.
  • Unlike first-generation antihistamines, cetirizine has minimal sedative effects, meaning it causes less drowsiness.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Alerid Syrup is typically given once daily.
  • The usual dose for adults and children over 6 years is 10 mg (10 ml of syrup) per day.
  • For children under 6 years, the dose is generally lower and should be adjusted by a healthcare provider.
  • Always follow the dosing instructions provided by the prescribing doctor or as per the medication’s label.

Side Effects:

Although cetirizine is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience:

  • Drowsiness (though less common than with older antihistamines)
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or other gastrointestinal disturbances

Precautions:

  • Drowsiness: Cetirizine may cause mild drowsiness in some individuals, so it’s important to be cautious when driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Kidney or Liver Issues: If you have impaired kidney or liver function, your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before using Alerid Syrup during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol may increase the sedative effects of cetirizine, so it’s advisable to avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication.

Storage:

  • Store below 30°C to maintain the syrup’s efficacy.
  • Keep the syrup in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Prescription:

Since Alerid Syrup requires a prescription, it should be used only under the guidance of a healthcare provider to ensure it’s appropriate for your condition.

Always consult your healthcare provider for the proper treatment and correct dosage tailored to your needs.
