Description
Telista MT 50 (Strip of 15 Tablets)
Composition (per uncoated bilayered tablet):
- Telmisartan IP (40 mg):
- Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), commonly used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure) and protect kidney function in certain conditions like diabetic nephropathy.
- Telmisartan works by blocking the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1), which prevents the vasoconstrictive effects of angiotensin II, causing blood vessels to relax and widen, ultimately lowering blood pressure and reducing the workload on the heart.
- Metoprolol Succinate IP (47.5 mg), equivalent to Metoprolol Tartrate 50 mg (Sustained-release form):
- Metoprolol is a beta-blocker used to treat hypertension, angina (chest pain), and heart failure.
- Metoprolol works by blocking the beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate, blood pressure, and the workload on the heart. This helps to improve heart function, particularly in heart failure, and to prevent complications from high blood pressure.
- The sustained-release form of Metoprolol Succinate allows for slow release of the medication over time, maintaining stable blood levels and offering the convenience of once-daily dosing.
Pharmacological Action:
- Telmisartan reduces blood pressure by blocking the vasoconstrictive effects of angiotensin II. It also provides cardiovascular protection and can prevent kidney damage in conditions like diabetes.
- Metoprolol slows the heart rate and reduces the force of heart contractions, thus lowering blood pressure and decreasing the heart’s oxygen demand. This makes it effective in controlling hypertension, managing heart failure, and reducing the risk of arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms).
Indications:
Telista MT 50 is used for:
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): The combination of Telmisartan and Metoprolol is effective in lowering high blood pressure and maintaining stable blood pressure control.
- Heart Failure: Metoprolol helps manage chronic heart failure by reducing the strain on the heart.
- Angina (Chest Pain): Metoprolol helps reduce the frequency and severity of angina by lowering heart rate and blood pressure.
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: In patients with risk factors like hypertension and heart disease, this combination can help prevent cardiovascular events such as stroke or heart attack.
Dosage:
- Typical Dose: One Telista MT 50 tablet per day, taken once daily. The combination of Telmisartan and Metoprolol provides a convenient single-pill therapy for hypertension and cardiovascular conditions.
- The dose may be adjusted based on individual patient needs, particularly if blood pressure is not well-controlled or if the patient experiences side effects.
- It is recommended to take the tablet at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed by the healthcare provider.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Telista MT 50 may include:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness: Especially when standing up suddenly, due to the blood pressure-lowering effect of both drugs.
- Fatigue: Due to Metoprolol’s beta-blocking action, which slows down the heart rate.
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia): Due to Metoprolol, especially in patients with already low heart rates.
- Gastrointestinal issues: Such as nausea, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea.
- Elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia): Mostly associated with Telmisartan.
- Cold hands and feet: Often a side effect of beta-blockers like Metoprolol.
Serious side effects may include:
- Severe dizziness, fainting, or a very slow heart rate: If blood pressure becomes too low.
- Angioedema: Rare, but possible, swelling of the face or throat, which requires immediate medical attention.
- Liver or kidney problems: Especially in patients with pre-existing conditions.
Precautions:
- Pregnancy: Telmisartan should not be used during pregnancy (especially in the second and third trimesters) due to potential harm to the fetus.
- Liver and Kidney Function: Caution is advised in patients with liver or kidney impairment. Telmisartan may require dose adjustment, and kidney function should be monitored regularly.
- Bradycardia (Slow Heart Rate): Metoprolol should be used with caution in patients with a very slow heart rate or heart block.
- Diabetes: Beta-blockers like Metoprolol can mask the symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in diabetic patients. Regular blood glucose monitoring is recommended.
- Discontinuation: Do not suddenly stop Metoprolol without consulting a doctor, as abrupt withdrawal can cause adverse heart effects, including arrhythmias or increased blood pressure.
Storage:
- Store Telista MT 50 tablets in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
- Keep the medication out of the reach of children.
