Description

Sitared M 50/500mg – Strip of 15 Tablets

Sitared M 50/500mg is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients: Sitagliptin and Metformin. It is primarily used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition in which the body does not effectively use insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels.

Active Ingredients:

  1. Sitagliptin (50 mg):
    • Sitagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor (Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 inhibitor), which works by increasing the levels of incretins in the body. Incretins are hormones that help increase insulin production in response to meals and decrease the amount of sugar produced by the liver.
    • It helps in regulating blood sugar levels by improving insulin secretion when blood sugar is elevated.
  2. Metformin (500 mg):
    • Metformin is a biguanide that works by reducing hepatic glucose production (the amount of glucose produced by the liver), improving insulin sensitivity in muscle and fat tissues, and enhancing glucose uptake by cells.
    • It helps control blood sugar levels and is often the first-line medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes.

Indications:

Sitared M 50/500mg is used for the management of:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus: It is prescribed to help control high blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes, particularly when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. It can be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications.
  • Improvement of glycemic control: It is especially useful in patients who need better blood sugar control, either when metformin alone is not enough or when sitagliptin is added to enhance insulin function.

Dosage:

  • The usual dosage is 1 tablet (50 mg Sitagliptin and 500 mg Metformin) taken once or twice a day with meals, as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The dosage may be adjusted based on your individual needs and blood sugar levels. For some patients, the dose of Metformin may be gradually increased to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Side Effects:

Sitared M 50/500mg may cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Common and serious side effects include:

  • Common side effects:
    • Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite (common with Metformin).
    • Headache.
    • Upper respiratory infections or sore throat.
    • Dizziness or tiredness.
  • Serious side effects (rare but require immediate medical attention):
    • Lactic acidosis (a rare but serious side effect of Metformin), characterized by symptoms like muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, or feeling cold.
    • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when taken with other diabetic medications that increase insulin secretion.
    • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling.
    • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) can occur with Sitagliptin, though this is rare.

If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Precautions:

  • Kidney or liver problems: Metformin is primarily excreted through the kidneys, and impaired kidney function can lead to an increased risk of lactic acidosis. Kidney function should be monitored regularly, and the drug should not be used if the patient has severe renal impairment. Sitagliptin may also require dose adjustment based on kidney function.
  • Heart or circulatory problems: Caution is advised for patients with heart conditions. Metformin should be used with caution in individuals with cardiovascular disease or a history of heart failure.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and should be limited or avoided while on Metformin.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: If pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication, as there are limited studies on the safety of Sitared M during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Warnings:

  • Hypoglycemia: While Sitagliptin itself does not typically cause hypoglycemia, when used in combination with other medications that increase insulin production (such as sulfonylureas or insulin), it may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
  • Liver and kidney monitoring: Regular monitoring of kidney function is essential, as both Sitagliptin and Metformin can affect kidney function, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney disease.
  • Lactic acidosis: This is a serious complication that can occur with Metformin, although it is very rare. It is more likely in those with kidney problems, alcohol abuse, or severe dehydration.
