Sitara-M 100/1000 mg (Strip of 10 Tablets) is a combination medication prescribed for managing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains two active ingredients—Sitagliptin (100 mg) and Metformin (1000 mg)—that work synergistically to control blood sugar levels effectively.

Composition:

1. Sitagliptin (100 mg):
   • A DPP-4 (Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4) inhibitor.
   • Enhances the effects of incretin hormones, increasing insulin release after meals and reducing glucose production by the liver.
2. Metformin Hydrochloride (1000 mg):
   • A Biguanide that:
     • Reduces glucose production in the liver.
     • Improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
     • Decreases glucose absorption from the intestines.

Uses:

• Treats Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults.
• Suitable for patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled by diet, exercise, or metformin monotherapy.
• Helps reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as cardiovascular diseases, nerve damage, and kidney damage.

Dosage:

• Typically, one tablet daily, preferably with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
• The exact dosage may be adjusted based on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment.

Possible Side Effects:

1. Common Side Effects:
   • Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or mild headache.
2. Rare but Serious Side Effects:
   • Lactic Acidosis (linked to Metformin): Symptoms include muscle pain, difficulty breathing, extreme fatigue, and irregular heartbeat.
   • Pancreatitis (linked to Sitagliptin): Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and persistent vomiting.
   • Hypoglycemia (more likely if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas).

Precautions:

• Not recommended for patients with:
  • Severe kidney or liver impairment.
  • History of lactic acidosis or pancreatitis.
• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
• Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood sugar levels is advised.
