Description
Rabium 20 – Strip of 15 Tablets
Rabium 20 – Strip of 15 Tablets is a medication primarily used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid production, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and acid indigestion. It contains Rabeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which helps to reduce stomach acid production.
Composition:
Each Rabium 20 tablet contains:
- Rabeprazole Sodium (20 mg): Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by blocking the proton pump in the stomach lining, which is responsible for secreting hydrochloric acid. This helps reduce stomach acid production, promoting healing of ulcers, and reducing acid reflux symptoms.
Uses:
Rabium 20 is prescribed for the following conditions:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): It is used to reduce acid reflux and the associated symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation. It also helps in healing damage caused by acid reflux to the esophagus.
- Peptic Ulcers: It is used to treat and heal gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers by reducing stomach acid production, which helps in ulcer healing and prevention of recurrence.
- Helicobacter pylori Eradication: Rabeprazole is sometimes used as part of a combination therapy to treat H. pylori infections, a common cause of peptic ulcers. It helps create an environment in the stomach that facilitates the eradication of this bacteria.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: This condition, where the stomach produces excessive amounts of acid, can be managed with Rabium 20 to reduce acid levels.
- Dyspepsia (Indigestion): It is effective in treating indigestion, particularly if it is caused by acid reflux or excess stomach acid.
Dosage:
The usual dosage of Rabium 20 is:
- For GERD: One tablet (20 mg) once daily, generally before breakfast.
- For Peptic Ulcers: One tablet (20 mg) once daily, typically taken before breakfast.
- For H. pylori Eradication: Rabeprazole may be used in combination with antibiotics such as clarithromycin and amoxicillin for a course of treatment, usually lasting 7-14 days.
- The exact dose and duration may vary depending on the condition being treated and the doctor’s instructions.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Rabium 20 may include:
- Headache.
- Diarrhea.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Abdominal pain or discomfort.
- Flatulence (gas).
- Dizziness.
- Fatigue or feeling tired.
Serious side effects (although rare) include:
- Severe allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
- Severe stomach pain (which may indicate a more serious problem like pancreatitis).
- Long-term use can lead to nutrient deficiencies, especially vitamin B12 and magnesium.
- Bone fractures: Prolonged use of PPIs has been linked to an increased risk of bone fractures, particularly in older adults.
- Kidney problems: Long-term use of PPIs has also been associated with kidney disease in rare cases.
Precautions:
- Liver Disease: Rabium 20 should be used with caution in patients with liver problems, as the drug is metabolized in the liver. Liver function should be monitored during treatment.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Rabium 20 should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. It is not recommended during breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk.
- Kidney Disease: People with impaired kidney function should use this medication with caution.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, especially warfarin, methotrexate, and clopidogrel, as Rabeprazole can interact with these drugs.
- Long-term Use: Extended use of Rabium 20 should be monitored by a healthcare provider to reduce the risks of nutrient deficiencies and other potential complications.
Drug Interactions:
- Clopidogrel: Rabium 20 may reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel, an antiplatelet medication used to prevent blood clots.
- Warfarin: Rabium 20 may increase the effects of warfarin, a blood thinner, which could lead to an increased risk of bleeding. Frequent monitoring of blood clotting is advised.
- Methotrexate: Combining Rabium 20 with methotrexate may lead to increased levels of methotrexate, potentially causing toxicity.
- Digoxin: Rabium 20 can increase the levels of digoxin (used to treat heart conditions), which may require adjustments in dosing.
