PULMOCEF CV 500 TAB

1. Composition
Pulmocef CV 500 is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic. Each tablet contains:

  • Cefuroxime Axetil (equivalent to cefuroxime): 500 mg

  • Clavulanic Acid: 125 mg in many sources.

(Note: Some sources vary: e.g., PharmacyBazar lists 125 mg clavulanic acid per 500 mg cefuroxime tablet.

The drug is manufactured by Micro Labs Ltd.

2. Mechanism of Action

  • Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis: it binds to penicillin-binding proteins in bacteria, preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan, which weakens the cell wall and leads to bacterial death.

  • Clavulanic acid is a β-lactamase inhibitor. Many bacteria produce β-lactamase enzymes that inactivate β-lactam antibiotics like cefuroxime. Clavulanic acid binds irreversibly to these enzymes, protecting cefuroxime from degradation and thereby broadening its spectrum or restoring its efficacy.
Together, this combination helps overcome bacterial resistance mediated by β-lactamase–producing organisms.

3. Indications (Uses)
Pulmocef CV 500 is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, such as:

  • Respiratory tract infections (including lower respiratory tract infections)

  • Sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis

  • Otitis media (ear infections)

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • In some sources, also bone and joint infections, septicaemia, meningitis, Lyme disease, etc.
Because of the clavulanic acid, it is more effective against bacteria that would otherwise break down cefuroxime via β-lactamases.

4. Dosage and Administration

  • According to CIMS, Pulmocef CV is available in 500/125 mg tablets.

  • According to PharmEasy, the medicine may be taken with or without food, but it’s better to take it at a fixed time every day.

  • Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet — swallow it whole.

  • In case of a missed dose: take as soon as you remember, but if it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.

  • Complete the full prescribed course, even if you feel better before finishing it, to avoid antibiotic resistance.

5. Side Effects
Common side effects include:

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Increased liver enzymes (indicating possible liver stress)

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling) in sensitive individuals

If diarrhoea is severe, or there is blood/mucus in the stool, or abdominal pain, one should consult a doctor.

6. Contraindications and Warnings

  • Avoid Pulmocef CV if you are allergic to cephalosporins (like cefuroxime) or clavulanic acid.

  • Use caution in patients with liver impairment; liver enzyme monitoring may be needed.

  • Use in kidney disease: dose adjustment may be required because cefuroxime is eliminated by the kidneys.

  • In pregnancy, Pulmocef CV can be used if clearly needed, but only under medical supervision.

  • In breastfeeding, cefuroxime passes into breast milk; risk vs. benefit should be considered.

  • There is a risk of antibiotic resistance if the full course is not completed.

  • It may cause a Jarisch–Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, headache) in some patients, especially if used for more than 7 days.

7. Drug Interactions

  • There may be interactions with oral contraceptives, antacids, and probenecid (a gout medicine).

  • According to Apollo Pharmacy, co-administration with dalteparin (a blood thinner) can raise blood levels and effects.

  • Antacids may reduce absorption of the drug.

  • It might interfere with certain lab tests: for example, with the ferricyanide test for blood glucose, it can give false-negatives.

8. Precautions and Storage

  • Store at room temperature (10-30°C) as per CareIndiaHealth.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Do not share this antibiotic with others, even if their symptoms are similar — improper use can lead to resistance.

  • Dispose any unused medicine properly after the course is complete.

9. Special Advice

  • Avoid alcohol while on this medicine (some sources advise against it) because alcohol can worsen side effects. If you experience severe adverse reactions like swelling of face/tongue, breathing difficulty, or severe rash, stop the drug and seek medical help immediately.

  • Because it’s a β-lactam antibiotic, misuse can contribute to antibiotic resistance, so adhere strictly to the prescription.

10. Pricing

  • According to 1mg, Pulmocef CV 500 Tablet costs around ₹49.2 per tablet (strip of 10) for their available offer.

  • According to Wellness Forever, 10-tablet strip MRP is ₹582.

Conclusion
Pulmocef CV 500 is a powerful combination antibiotic (cefuroxime + clavulanic acid) used for a wide range of bacterial infections. The clavulanic acid component helps prevent bacterial resistance by inhibiting β-lactamase enzymes, allowing cefuroxime to remain effective. It’s important to complete the full course, take it at the same time daily, and follow medical advice to minimize side effects and avoid resistance.*

Benefits of Pulmocef-CV Tablet

In Treatment of Bacterial infections

Pulmocef-CV 500 Tablet contains two different medicines, Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid, that work together to kill the bacteria that cause infections. Cefuroxime works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Clavulanic Acid reduces resistance and enhances the activity of Cefuroxime against bacteria.

This combination medicine can be used to treat many different bacterial infections such as ear, sinus, throat, lung, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It usually makes you feel better within a few days, but you should continue taking it as prescribed even when you feel better to make sure that all bacteria are killed and do not become resistant.

How Pulmocef-CV Tablet works

Pulmocef-CV 500 Tablet is a combination of two medicines: Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid. Cefuroxime is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering which is essential for the survival of bacteria in the human body. Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor which blocks the action of enzymes produced by bacteria to inactivate Cefuroxime. Addition of Clavulanic Acid reduces resistance and enhances the activity of Cefuroxime against bacteria.
