👁️ As Eye Drops:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis

  • Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)

  • Keratitis (non-viral)

👂 As Ear Drops:

  • Otitis externa (outer ear infection)

  • Ear discharge due to bacterial infection (if eardrum is intact)

⚙️ Mechanism of Action:

  • Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis

  • Polymyxin B disrupts bacterial cell membranes
    → Together they act synergistically against a broad spectrum of bacteria


🧴 Dosage (Typical):

👁️ Eyes:

  • 1–2 drops into the affected eye(s), every 4–6 hours, or as prescribed

👂 Ears:

  • 2–3 drops into the affected ear(s), 2–3 times daily

Shake well before use and wash hands before application.


⚠️ Precautions:

  • Do not use in viral or fungal infections

  • Do not use while wearing contact lenses

  • Prolonged use may lead to superinfections (like fungal growth)

  • Use with caution in children and pregnant women

  • May cause hypersensitivity reactions


Contraindications:

  • Allergy to Chloramphenicol, Polymyxin B, or mercurial preservatives

  • Patients with blood disorders (aplastic anemia risk with long-term chloramphenicol use)
