Description
Gudcef-CV 100 (Strip of 10 Tablets)
Composition (per film-coated tablet):
- Cefpodoxime (100 mg):
- Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to the death of the bacteria. This broad-spectrum antibiotic is effective against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some strains resistant to other antibiotics.
- It is commonly used for treating respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and some ear infections.
- Clavulanic Acid (62.5 mg):
- Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which prevents the bacterial enzyme beta-lactamase from breaking down beta-lactam antibiotics like Cefpodoxime.
- Many bacteria produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that can degrade antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins, rendering them ineffective. By inhibiting this enzyme, clavulanic acid enhances the effectiveness of Cefpodoxime, allowing it to fight a wider range of bacterial infections.
Pharmacological Action:
- Cefpodoxime targets bacterial cell wall synthesis, inhibiting key enzymes responsible for the production of peptidoglycan, a major component of the bacterial cell wall. This causes the cell wall to weaken and eventually rupture, killing the bacteria.
- Clavulanic Acid works synergistically with Cefpodoxime, protecting it from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, thereby broadening the spectrum of its activity.
Indications:
Gudcef-CV 100 is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and tonsillitis.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including cystitis and pyelonephritis.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Caused by beta-lactamase-producing organisms.
- Ear Infections: Like otitis media.
The addition of Clavulanic Acid allows Cefpodoxime to be effective against beta-lactamase-producing organisms that may be resistant to Cefpodoxime alone.
Dosage:
The typical dosage of Gudcef-CV 100 depends on the infection being treated. Generally, it is taken orally with or without food, and the usual adult dose is:
- Cefpodoxime 100 mg twice a day, but dosage adjustments may be needed based on the infection’s severity.
- Pediatric doses vary depending on age and weight.
Always follow the exact dosage instructions provided by a healthcare professional to ensure proper treatment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
- Allergic Reactions: Rash, itching, swelling, especially in individuals with allergies to penicillin or cephalosporins.
- Hematological: Rare effects may include changes in blood counts, such as a low white blood cell count or low platelets.
- Liver/Kidney Issues: Rare but possible, particularly in patients with pre-existing liver or kidney problems.
In the case of severe allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat), immediate medical attention should be sought.
Precautions:
- Allergy: If you are allergic to penicillins, cephalosporins, or beta-lactamase inhibitors, this drug should be avoided.
- Kidney or Liver Disease: People with pre-existing kidney or liver issues may need dose adjustments and close monitoring.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a doctor before using this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Superinfection: Long-term use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi, and should be monitored.
Storage:
- Store the tablets in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture (usually below 25°C).
- Keep them out of the reach of children.
