Description
Ampoxin-500 Capsule 15’s
Ampoxin-500 Capsule (15’s) is a combination antibiotic containing Ampicillin Trihydrate and Cloxacillin Sodium, which is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Composition:
- Ampicillin Trihydrate I.P. equivalent to Ampicillin 250 mg
- Cloxacillin Sodium I.P. equivalent to Cloxacillin 250 mg
What Each Ingredient Does:
- Ampicillin (250 mg):
- Antibiotic (Penicillin class): Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin-type antibiotic that works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form their cell walls, ultimately leading to the death of the bacteria. It is effective against a variety of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms.
- Cloxacillin (250 mg):
- Antibiotic (Penicillinase-resistant penicillin): Cloxacillin is also a penicillin-type antibiotic, but it is specifically designed to be resistant to beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria that could otherwise destroy regular penicillins. This makes it especially useful for treating infections caused by penicillin-resistant staphylococci, such as Staphylococcus aureus.
Indications:
Ampoxin-500 is typically used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Respiratory infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, and other bacterial lung infections.
- Skin and soft tissue infections: Cellulitis, abscesses, and infected wounds.
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Infections of the bladder, kidneys, or urethra.
- Ear infections: Otitis media or other ear-related bacterial infections.
- Bone and joint infections: Infections such as osteomyelitis.
- Gastrointestinal infections: Such as enteritis caused by bacterial pathogens.
Dosage:
- The typical dosage for Ampoxin-500 is one capsule taken every 12 hours (twice a day), or as prescribed by your doctor. The exact dosage may depend on the type and severity of the infection.
- It is generally recommended to take the capsule with food to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal irritation.
- Complete the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better before finishing it, to ensure the infection is fully treated and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
Common Side Effects:
Some of the side effects that may occur with Ampoxin-500 include:
- Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach cramps.
- Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, or swelling, particularly around the face, lips, or throat. Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) can occur.
- Fungal infections: Long-term use of antibiotics may lead to yeast infections (e.g., oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections).
- Liver and kidney issues: Rarely, antibiotics can affect liver or kidney function.
- Clostridium difficile infection: Prolonged use can cause an overgrowth of certain bacteria in the intestines, leading to severe diarrhea and abdominal pain (C. difficile infection).
- Changes in blood counts: Rare side effects include low white blood cell counts, anemia, or thrombocytopenia (low platelets).
Warnings and Precautions:
- Allergic Reactions: If you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins, you should avoid Ampoxin-500. It is important to inform your doctor about any history of allergic reactions to antibiotics.
- Kidney and Liver Function: Ampicillin and Cloxacillin can affect kidney and liver function, so these should be monitored, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions.
- Prolonged Use: Prolonged use of antibiotics like Ampoxin-500 can lead to antibiotic resistance. Only use this medication for the prescribed duration.
- Diarrhea: If you experience severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, contact your doctor immediately, as it could be a sign of Clostridium difficile infection, which is a serious complication.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Ampoxin-500 should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. It is generally considered safe to use during breastfeeding, but always consult a doctor before taking it while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Storage:
- Store the capsules in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
- Keep the medication out of reach of children.
