Description
Valcivir-500 (Strip of 3 Tablets)
Composition (per film-coated tablet):
- Valacyclovir Hydrochloride (500 mg):
- Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication used primarily to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Valacyclovir is a prodrug of Acyclovir, meaning that after oral administration, it is converted in the body to its active form, Acyclovir.
Mechanism of Action:
- Valacyclovir, once converted into Acyclovir in the body, inhibits viral DNA polymerase, an enzyme crucial for the replication of the herpes virus. By blocking the replication of viral DNA, Acyclovir reduces the ability of the virus to multiply and spread, leading to a reduction in the severity and duration of the infection.
Indications:
Valacyclovir is primarily used to treat infections caused by the herpes viruses, including:
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Infections:
- Genital Herpes: Valacyclovir is used to treat primary and recurrent genital herpes caused by HSV-2.
- Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): It is also used to treat oral herpes (cold sores) caused by HSV-1.
- Herpes Simplex Encephalitis: In severe cases of brain infection due to HSV, Valacyclovir may be used.
- Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) Infections:
- Herpes Zoster (Shingles): Valacyclovir is effective in reducing the severity and duration of shingles, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
- Chickenpox (Varicella): Valacyclovir may be prescribed for the treatment of chickenpox in children or adults, particularly in immunocompromised patients.
- Prevention of Recurrent Herpes Infections: Valacyclovir may also be used for the prevention (prophylaxis) of recurrent genital herpes or cold sores, especially in individuals with frequent outbreaks.
Dosage:
The usual dosage of Valcivir-500 varies depending on the condition being treated:
- Herpes Zoster (Shingles): The typical dosage is 500 mg, taken three times a day for 7 days.
- Genital Herpes:
- Initial outbreak: 500 mg taken two times a day for 7-10 days.
- Recurrent outbreaks: 500 mg taken two times a day for 3-5 days.
- Suppressive therapy for recurrent genital herpes: 500 mg taken once daily or 1000 mg taken once daily to reduce the frequency of outbreaks.
- Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): 500 mg, taken twice daily for 5 days at the onset of symptoms.
- Prevention of Herpes Zoster: 500 mg taken once daily for immunocompromised individuals to prevent the recurrence of shingles.
The exact dosage and duration should be prescribed by a healthcare provider, based on the patient’s condition and the severity of the infection.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Valcivir-500 may include:
- Headache.
- Nausea.
- Abdominal pain.
- Dizziness.
- Fatigue.
Rare but serious side effects may include:
- Kidney problems, especially in individuals with existing kidney issues.
- Allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
- Confusion, hallucinations, or seizures (especially in elderly patients or those with kidney issues).
- Low blood cell counts, leading to an increased risk of infection or bleeding.
Precautions:
- Renal Impairment: Valacyclovir is eliminated from the body via the kidneys, so it should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. A dose adjustment may be needed for these patients.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Valacyclovir is classified as pregnancy category B, meaning it is not expected to harm the fetus but should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. It is excreted in breast milk, so it should be used with caution while breastfeeding.
- Hydration: Adequate hydration should be maintained during treatment to help prevent kidney-related side effects.
- Allergic Reactions: If any signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) appear, Valacyclovir should be discontinued immediately, and medical help should be sought.
- Elderly Patients: Elderly individuals may be more prone to side effects like confusion, especially if they have kidney problems. Renal function should be monitored in these patients.
Storage:
- Store Valcivir-500 tablets in a cool, dry place, away from direct light.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
