Description
DAPAONE-M 10/500 is a combination medication used primarily for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains Dapagliflozin (10mg) and Metformin (500mg), two active ingredients that work together to help control blood sugar levels.
Composition:
Each tablet of DAPAONE-M 10/500 contains:
- Dapagliflozin 10 mg
- Metformin 500 mg
Indications:
DAPAONE-M 10/500 is prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults, particularly in patients who:
- Have not achieved adequate control of blood sugar with diet and exercise alone.
- Need a combination therapy to improve blood glucose control.
The two components work synergistically to lower blood sugar levels through different mechanisms:
- Dapagliflozin (an SGLT2 inhibitor) helps by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, promoting glucose excretion in urine.
- Metformin (a biguanide) works by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing glucose production in the liver, and enhancing the uptake of glucose by cells.
Mechanism of Action:
- Dapagliflozin (SGLT2 inhibitor) works by inhibiting the SGLT2 transporter in the kidneys. This prevents glucose from being reabsorbed from urine back into the blood, causing excess glucose to be excreted in the urine.
- Metformin improves the body’s response to insulin and reduces glucose production by the liver. It also enhances glucose uptake in muscles and tissues, lowering blood glucose levels.
Dosage:
- DAPAONE-M 10/500 is usually taken once or twice daily with meals to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea and stomach upset.
- The starting dose is typically one tablet (Dapagliflozin 10mg/Metformin 500mg) once daily, which can be increased as necessary.
- Your doctor may adjust the dosage based on your blood sugar control and tolerance.
Side Effects:
Like all medications, DAPAONE-M 10/500 can cause side effects. Common side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or bloating (especially with Metformin).
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Dapagliflozin can increase the risk of UTIs.
- Genital infections: Increased glucose in the urine may increase the risk of yeast infections in both men and women.
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): Particularly when combined with other antidiabetic medications (e.g., sulfonylureas or insulin).
- Dehydration: Due to the diuretic effect of Dapagliflozin.
- Lactic acidosis: A rare but serious side effect associated with Metformin. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, muscle pain, and breathing difficulties.
- Elevated blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia): This can cause serious heart issues.
Precautions:
- Kidney function: DAPAONE-M 10/500 should be used cautiously in patients with impaired kidney function. Your doctor may monitor kidney function periodically while you are on this medication.
- Metformin-related side effects: Patients should be monitored for signs of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious complication of Metformin.
- Heart disease and dehydration: Patients with heart failure or dehydration should take this medication with caution as Dapagliflozin can affect fluid balance.
- Gastrointestinal symptoms: If you experience persistent gastrointestinal side effects from Metformin, your doctor may adjust the dosage or switch medications.
- Alcohol: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: DAPAONE-M 10/500 is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Administration:
- Take DAPAONE-M 10/500 with food to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
- Do not crush or chew the tablet.
- Take the medication at the same time each day to help remember.
