Description
Bisonext 5 – Strip of 15 Tablets
Bisonext 5 is a medication that contains Levocetirizine as its active ingredient. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine, which is commonly used to relieve symptoms associated with allergic reactions such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, or urticaria (hives). It is a second-generation antihistamine, meaning it is less likely to cause drowsiness compared to first-generation antihistamines.
Active Ingredient:
- Levocetirizine (5 mg per tablet)
Uses of Bisonext 5:
Bisonext 5 (Levocetirizine) is typically used to treat the following conditions:
- Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever):
- Levocetirizine is effective in treating the symptoms of allergic rhinitis caused by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander. These symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose, itching in the eyes/nose, and nasal congestion.
- Urticaria (Hives):
- Bisonext is also used to treat chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) in adults and children over 6 years old. It helps relieve itching, redness, and swelling caused by hives or other allergic skin conditions.
- Seasonal Allergies:
- It is particularly effective for seasonal allergic rhinitis, which occurs during specific seasons when pollen levels are high (e.g., spring and summer).
- Other Allergic Conditions:
- Levocetirizine may also be used for other allergic conditions, particularly when symptoms affect the skin (e.g., itching, rashes) or respiratory system (e.g., congestion, sneezing).
How Bisonext 5 (Levocetirizine) Works:
- Levocetirizine is an antihistamine, which works by blocking histamine receptors (H1 receptors) in the body.
- Histamine is a chemical released by the body during allergic reactions that causes symptoms like itching, swelling, redness, and increased mucus production.
- By blocking the effects of histamine, Levocetirizine helps to reduce allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives.
Dosage and Administration:
- Typical Dose for Adults and Children (12 years and older):
- The usual dose is 5 mg once daily, taken with or without food.
- The tablet should be swallowed whole with water.
- Children (6-12 years old):
- The usual dose is 5 mg once daily (one tablet). For some children, the dose may be adjusted depending on the doctor’s recommendations.
- Children (under 6 years old):
- The use of Levocetirizine in younger children should be done under medical supervision and in the appropriate dosage form (liquid or chewable tablet).
- Renal Impairment:
- If you have kidney problems, your doctor may recommend a lower dose or less frequent dosing. Always inform your healthcare provider if you have any history of kidney issues.
- Administration:
- It’s best to take the medication at the same time each day to make it easier to remember.
- The tablet should be swallowed whole, and it can be taken with or without food.
Side Effects of Bisonext 5 (Levocetirizine):
Levocetirizine is generally well tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects. Common and less common side effects include:
- Common Side Effects:
- Drowsiness or fatigue (though less likely than with first-generation antihistamines)
- Dry mouth
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Sore throat or cough
- Stomach discomfort or nausea
- Nasal congestion (in some cases)
- Serious Side Effects (Rare):
- Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
- Heart problems, such as fast or irregular heart rate
- Liver problems: Signs of liver dysfunction (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine) are rare, but should be reported to a doctor immediately.
- Mental or mood changes: Uncommon, but some individuals may experience agitation, nervousness, or depression.
- Severe dizziness or fainting (may indicate a more serious condition).
Precautions and Warnings:
- Drowsiness: Although Levocetirizine is less sedating than older antihistamines, it can still cause drowsiness or fatigue in some people. Caution should be exercised if you plan to drive or operate heavy machinery after taking this medication.
- Kidney Impairment: If you have renal impairment (kidney disease), your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend a different treatment, as Levocetirizine is cleared by the kidneys.
- Pregnancy: Levocetirizine is considered to be Category B for pregnancy, meaning it is not expected to harm the fetus. However, it should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed and prescribed by your doctor.
- Breastfeeding: Levocetirizine passes into breast milk in small amounts. It is usually considered safe for breastfeeding mothers, but you should consult your doctor if you plan to breastfeed.
- Allergic Reaction: If you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe rash, seek medical attention immediately.
Drug Interactions:
- Levocetirizine has a low potential for drug interactions, but it’s still important to inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, especially:
- CNS depressants: Taking Levocetirizine with sedatives, alcohol, or other medications that cause drowsiness can increase the risk of excessive sedation.
- Theophylline: This medication can increase the levels of Levocetirizine in the blood, so dosage adjustments may be necessary.
- Other antihistamines: Combining Levocetirizine with other antihistamines is not recommended, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
Storage:
- Store Bisonext 5 at room temperature (15°C to 30°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the medication out of reach of children.
- Do not use the medication past the expiration date printed on the packaging.
