Description

Azithral Syrup is a formulation of Azithromycin, which is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is manufactured by Alembic Pharmaceuticals, a well-known Indian pharmaceutical company.

Composition:

  • Active Ingredient: Azithromycin.
    • Each 5 mL of Azithral Syrup typically contains 200 mg of Azithromycin (or 100 mg per 2.5 mL, depending on the strength).

What is Azithromycin?

  • Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It binds to bacterial ribosomes and prevents protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial replication.
  • It is often preferred for its relatively long half-life, allowing for shorter treatment regimens compared to other antibiotics.

Indications (Uses):

Azithral Syrup is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections, including:

  • Upper Respiratory Infections: Sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and otitis media (ear infections).
  • Lower Respiratory Infections: Bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Impetigo, cellulitis, and other bacterial skin infections.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Such as traveler’s diarrhea caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections: Like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and others.
  • Ear and Throat Infections: Like sore throat or middle ear infections in children.

Dosage:

  • For Adults and Children (over 6 months): The typical dosage is 10 mg/kg body weight on the first day, followed by 5 mg/kg body weight once daily for the next 4 days.
  • The dosage may vary depending on the severity of the infection and the doctor’s recommendation.
  • Example Dosage (Children):
    • A typical dose could be 5 mL (200 mg) once daily for 3 to 5 days for common respiratory infections like ear infections or throat infections.
  • Duration: Usually, Azithral Syrup is prescribed for 3 to 5 days, depending on the infection. However, the exact duration should be determined by the prescribing doctor.

How to Take Azithral Syrup:

  • Oral Administration: It is taken by mouth with or without food. However, taking it with food may help reduce stomach irritation in some people.
  • Use a measuring spoon or syringe to ensure the correct dose is taken.

Side Effects:

Like any medication, Azithral Syrup may cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Some common and less common side effects include:

  • Common Side Effects:
    • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain or cramps
    • Mild headache or dizziness
    • Skin rash or itching
  • Serious Side Effects (Rare):
    • Allergic reactions: Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat.
    • Severe diarrhea (which may be a sign of Clostridium difficile infection).
    • Liver problems: Symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, and pale stools.
    • Cardiac issues: Azithromycin can affect heart rhythm, leading to rare cases of QT prolongation (which can be dangerous in individuals with heart conditions).

Precautions:

  • Allergies: If you are allergic to azithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or any of the ingredients in the syrup, you should not take Azithral Syrup.
  • Liver or Kidney Disease: Use Azithral Syrup with caution in people with liver or kidney problems, as it may need dosage adjustments.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Azithromycin is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B), but it should still be used only when prescribed by a doctor. It is also excreted in breast milk, so if breastfeeding, a healthcare provider should be consulted.
  • Drug Interactions: Azithromycin may interact with certain drugs, including antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, warfarin (a blood thinner), and medications that affect heart rhythm. Always inform your doctor about other medications you’re taking.

Contraindications:

  • Known allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
  • Severe liver disease: As Azithromycin is metabolized in the liver, it should be avoided in individuals with severe liver impairment.

Storage:

  • Store Azithral Syrup at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F), away from light and moisture.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children.
  • Check the expiration date before using, and do not use the syrup past that date.
