AZEE 200 Dry Syrup is a pediatric formulation of Azithromycin, an antibiotic manufactured by Cipla Ltd. Azithromycin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial growth.

Composition:

  • Active Ingredient: Azithromycin 200 mg per 5 mL of syrup.

What is Azithromycin?

  • Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins they need to grow and replicate. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, especially those caused by respiratory and skin bacteria, as well as some sexually transmitted infections.

Indications (Uses):

AZEE 200 Dry Syrup is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections in children and is used for conditions such as:

  • Respiratory Tract Infections:
    • Pharyngitis (sore throat)
    • Tonsillitis
    • Sinusitis
    • Bronchitis
    • Pneumonia
  • Ear Infections: Otitis media (middle ear infections).
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Including impetigo, cellulitis, and other bacterial skin infections.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Such as traveler’s diarrhea.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Chlamydia and Gonorrhea (in certain cases).
  • Other Bacterial Infections: Including those caused by susceptible bacteria.

Dosage:

  • For Children:
    • The typical pediatric dosage of AZEE 200 Dry Syrup depends on the child’s weight and the type of infection being treated.
    • General Dosage Guidelines (for children aged 6 months to 12 years):
      • For Respiratory Infections: A dose of 10 mg/kg body weight on the first day, followed by 5 mg/kg/day for the next 4 days.
      • For Ear Infections (Otitis Media): A similar dosage regimen of 10 mg/kg on Day 1, followed by 5 mg/kg daily for 4 more days.
      • For Pharyngitis or Tonsillitis: A common regimen is 10 mg/kg/day for 3 to 5 days, depending on the severity.
    • Example: If a child weighs 10 kg, a typical initial dose would be 100 mg on Day 1 (5 mL of AZEE 200 Dry Syrup), followed by 50 mg daily (2.5 mL) for the next 4 days.

Note: Dosage and duration should always be based on the pediatrician’s recommendation and the child’s specific condition.

How to Use:

  • Preparation: Since it is a dry syrup, the bottle should be reconstituted with the specified amount of water (usually indicated on the label) before use.
  • Administration: After preparation, give the prescribed dose using the measuring spoon or syringe provided in the packaging.
  • With or Without Food: Azithromycin can be taken with or without food. However, if it causes stomach upset, you may give it with food to reduce discomfort.

Side Effects:

Most children tolerate AZEE 200 Dry Syrup well, but like all medications, it can cause some side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms:
    • Diarrhea or soft stools
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Abdominal pain or cramps
    • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Rash (skin reactions can occur, but these are generally mild)

Serious Side Effects (rare):

  • Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, hives, and rash.
  • Severe diarrhea: In rare cases, Clostridium difficile infection can lead to severe diarrhea, which requires immediate medical attention.
  • Liver toxicity: Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or pale stools.
  • Cardiac issues: Azithromycin may cause changes in heart rhythm, leading to QT prolongation, though this is rare in children.

Precautions:

  • Allergy to Azithromycin or Macrolides: If your child is allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics, do not use AZEE 200.
  • Liver or Kidney Disease: Azithromycin is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys, so if your child has liver or kidney problems, the dosage may need to be adjusted, and close monitoring may be required.
  • Heart Conditions: Azithromycin can affect heart rhythm in some cases. It should be used with caution in children with heart disease or those who are taking other medications that can prolong the QT interval.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Azithromycin is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B) and can be used while breastfeeding, but always consult a healthcare provider.

Drug Interactions:

Azithromycin can interact with some medications. Common drug interactions include:

  • Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum can reduce the absorption of Azithromycin, so it is recommended to space the doses of antacids and Azithromycin by at least 2 hours.
  • Warfarin (a blood thinner): Azithromycin can increase the effect of warfarin, so if your child is on this medication, their INR levels (blood clotting ability) may need to be monitored.
  • Drugs affecting heart rhythm: Azithromycin can interact with medications that affect the QT interval, potentially leading to heart rhythm disturbances.

Contraindications:

  • Known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
  • Severe liver disease or liver failure.
  • History of arrhythmias or QT prolongation should be considered before use.

Storage:

  • Store the dry syrup at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F).
  • After reconstitution, keep the syrup in the refrigerator and use it within 5 to 7 days.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children.
