Composition (Per Tablet):

• Thyroxine Sodium I.P.
  Equivalent to Anhydrous Thyroxine Sodium 125 micrograms (mcg)

“I.P.” stands for Indian Pharmacopoeia, which ensures the drug meets Indian quality standards.

Uses / Indications:

Thyronorm is prescribed for:

• Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)

• Thyroid hormone replacement post-thyroidectomy or for goiters

• Thyroid suppression therapy in cases of certain thyroid cancers

• Congenital hypothyroidism in infants and children

• Myxedema coma (in injectable form) – emergency setting

Mechanism of Action:

Thyroxine (T4) is converted to Triiodothyronine (T3) in peripheral tissues, which regulates metabolism, energy production, and overall growth and development.

Dosage & Administration:

• Typically taken once daily on an empty stomach, preferably 30–60 minutes before breakfast.

• Dosage is individualized based on:

  • Age

  • Weight

  • Clinical condition

  • Serum TSH levels

  • Pregnancy or menopausal status

• Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Crushing or chewing is not recommended unless advised by a doctor.

Storage Instructions:

• Store in a cool, dry place, below 25°C

• Protect from light and moisture

• Keep out of reach of children

Common Side Effects (if over- or under-dosed):

• Overdose (Hyperthyroid symptoms): Palpitations, insomnia, heat intolerance, weight loss, anxiety, tremors

• Underdose (Hypothyroid symptoms): Fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, constipation, depression

Precautions & Warnings:

• Monitor TSH and free T4 levels regularly

• Adjust dose carefully in elderly, cardiac patients, and pregnant women

• Do not switch brands frequently without doctor’s advice (bioavailability may differ)

• Can interact with calcium, iron, antacids, cholestyramine, and other drugs – maintain a time gap

• Not suitable for weight loss in euthyroid individuals
