Description
Ginette 35 is a combination oral contraceptive that contains Cyproterone Acetate (2 mg) and Ethinylestradiol (0.035 mg). It is primarily used as a birth control pill but also has therapeutic uses in managing hormonal imbalances that contribute to conditions like acne, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), and irregular menstruation.
Composition:
- Cyproterone Acetate (2 mg): A synthetic progestin with anti-androgenic properties. It helps reduce the effects of male hormones (androgens) in the body, which is useful in treating conditions like acne and excessive hair growth (hirsutism) in women.
- Ethinylestradiol (0.035 mg): A synthetic form of estrogen, a female sex hormone. It helps regulate the menstrual cycle, and, in combination with Cyproterone acetate, works to prevent ovulation, making it an effective contraceptive.
Indications:
- Contraception: Ginette 35 is used as an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and making cervical mucus thicker, thus preventing sperm from reaching an egg.
- Acne: It is effective in treating moderate to severe acne, particularly in cases where other treatments (such as topical treatments) have not been successful.
- Hirsutism: Ginette 35 is used to treat excessive hair growth (hirsutism) in women, which can be caused by elevated levels of male hormones (androgens).
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): It may be used to manage symptoms of PCOS, such as acne and excessive hair growth.
How It Works:
- Cyproterone Acetate works by blocking the effects of androgens, reducing symptoms like acne and unwanted hair growth.
- Ethinylestradiol regulates the menstrual cycle and prevents ovulation when combined with Cyproterone acetate, which makes it effective for contraception.
Dosage:
- Ginette 35 is typically taken once a day for 21 consecutive days.
- After completing 21 days, there is a 7-day break during which you will likely experience a withdrawal bleed (similar to a menstrual period).
- After the 7-day break, the next pack is started to continue the cycle.
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headaches
- Breast tenderness or swelling
- Mood changes (e.g., depression or irritability)
- Weight gain or fluid retention
- Decreased libido (sexual drive)
Serious Side Effects (though rare):
- Blood clots: There is a slight increased risk of blood clots, especially in women who smoke or have other risk factors.
- Liver issues: Symptoms of liver problems may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
- High blood pressure: Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
- Vision issues: Rarely, changes in vision or visual disturbances may occur.
Contraindications:
Ginette 35 should not be used by women who have:
- A history of blood clots or clotting disorders
- Severe liver disease or liver tumors
- Certain types of cancer, such as breast or liver cancer
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
