CTD-12.5 Tablet – Detailed Information

Overview

CTD-12.5 is a prescription medication containing Chlorthalidone 12.5 mg, widely used for controlling high blood pressure (hypertension) and managing edema (fluid retention). Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-like diuretic, known for its long duration of action and high effectiveness in lowering blood pressure. It helps protect the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels from long-term damage caused by uncontrolled hypertension.

Composition

Each uncoated tablet contains:

  • Chlorthalidone IP – 12.5 mg

Description

CTD-12.5 works by increasing urine output, which helps remove excess salt and water from the body. This reduction in fluid volume results in a gradual decrease in blood pressure. Chlorthalidone also reduces peripheral resistance in the blood vessels, offering steady and prolonged BP control for up to 48–72 hours.

The 12.5 mg strength is considered an effective low-to-moderate dose, commonly used either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medications such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers, or calcium-channel blockers. It is a preferred option in long-term hypertension management due to its stability, long half-life, and proven cardiovascular benefits.

Uses

CTD-12.5 is prescribed for:

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Helps reduce and maintain healthy blood pressure levels.

Edema (Fluid Retention)

Due to:

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Liver disorders (such as cirrhosis)

  • Kidney diseases (including nephrotic syndrome)

Heart Protection

Long-term use reduces the risk of:

  • Stroke

  • Heart attack

  • Heart failure

  • Kidney damage

How CTD-12.5 Works

Chlorthalidone acts on the distal convoluted tubule of the kidneys by:

  • Blocking sodium and chloride reabsorption

  • Increasing the excretion of water, salt, and electrolytes

  • Reducing blood volume

  • Lowering pressure within the blood vessels

This combined action results in effective BP reduction, swelling control, and improved cardiovascular function.

Benefits

  • Offers long-lasting BP control (up to 2–3 days)

  • Very effective even at low doses

  • Reduces risk of cardiovascular complications

  • Useful as monotherapy or combination therapy

  • Helps manage chronic swelling conditions

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Increased urination

  • Dizziness on standing

  • Weakness or fatigue

  • Dry mouth

  • Nausea

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Low potassium levels (hypokalemia)

  • Low sodium (hyponatremia)

  • Increased uric acid (possible gout flare)

  • Elevated blood sugar

  • Muscle cramps

Precautions

  • Avoid excess salt; it reduces the medicine’s effect

  • Regular monitoring of electrolytes is advised

  • Inform doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart issues

  • Use cautiously in diabetes or gout patients

  • Not recommended during pregnancy unless prescribed

  • Do not stop the medicine suddenly without medical guidance
